WORLD LABOUR DAY – 1 MAY 2012
In recognition of 1 May 2012 as World Labour Day STARS is looking at how Nepal GoodWeave Foundation is supporting its workers and trying to eliminate child labour in the carpet industry in Nepal. According to the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) report Labour and Social Trends in Nepal 2010, 96.2% of all employed Nepali workers are engaged in informal work with less than 1.5% of employed Nepali women in formal work. The report goes on to state “the primary challenge is employment of poor quality, including low wages and productivity”. In addition to working on the prevention of child labour, Nepal GoodWeave Foundation is fighting to reduce poor quality working conditions and low wages in carpet factories through various different programmes.
