Preventable diseases and malnutrition are claiming the lives of millions of children under the age of five every year. Maternal anaemia, malnutrition, pregnancy and childbirth complications result in the death, injury and disability of more than half a million women and adolescents every year.

At least two billion people do not have access to adequate sanitation, and more than one billion lack access to safe drinking water.

HIV/AIDS is having a devastating effect on the lives of children and those who care for them. AIDS has already orphaned over 15 million children, and more than half a million infants are infected every year through mother-to-child transmission.
