S.A.F.E., Kenya

2009 RISING STAR
AFRICA-MIDDLE EAST

S.A.F.E. is a dynamic social change organisation that tackles discrimination and ensures that young people have access to basic health education in the most deprived areas of Kenya. S.A.F.E. harnesses the powerful local traditions of theatre and storytelling to communicate about HIV/AIDS through large-scale free street theatre tours, educational workshops and youth-led community events.

S.A.F.E. is using its Award funding to invest in a pilot project aimed at improving the services it delivers in schools. Following the success of a previous programme of sexual and reproductive health conducted in schools in coastal Kenya, S.A.F.E. is now developing activities that will allow participants to explore key issues identified as its biggest ongoing challenges, such as sexual relationships, drug and substance abuse, student-teacher relationships and discipline. The project will be carried out initially in three schools in Coastal Province and if successful, it will then be rolled out across the region.

S.A.F.E. has used a portion of its consultancy support to carry out finance training across the organisation, focused on simplifying existing systems, increasing understanding of financial systems and managing personal finance. STARS funding covered the trainer’s travel costs, allowing her to donate approximately £15,000 worth of consultancy for free. In addition, S.A.F.E. invested in IT training and has an IT consultant working to develop an intranet and text messaging service to support its work.
